Shetland ponies have a number of peculiarities that have to be studied and taken into consideration when caring for the horse. Thus, Shetlands are prone to obesity. They need less food than larger horses; otherwise, they gain weight too easily. Obesity can lead to feet problems, such as laminitis. Avoid giving Shetlands too little food. It can lead to hiperlipidemia and some other health problems.

Overall, Shetland ponies are sturdy horses. They are said to be much healthier than their larger counterparts. The mystery of their good health has always attracted attention of scientists. A recent study has confirmed that Shetlands have greater healing powers than other horses due to their genetics. It has been established that they heal their wounds 3 to 5 weeks quicker than other horses. It has also been confirmed that Shetland ponies have a higher inflammation level. As living conditions are concerns, Shetland ponies should be exercised in appropriate areas. The surface on which they spend most of their time should wear down the bearing edge of the hoof wall. Otherwise, they are likely to suffer from road founder and white line disease.
