Shetland Ponies - Official Organizations
The Shetland Pony Stud Book Society appeared to insure against breed destruction. Great breed popularity in the 19th century and its use as a working horse contributed much to the reduction of the population at the Shetland Islands, the native and principal area of Shetland pony breeding. The breeders sold their best breeding stock to be used in mines. It was particularly harmful for the quality of the breed and reduced the number of Shetlands. Having realized the threats to the breed, the Shetland pony owners and breeders initiated the stud. One of them, the 5th Marquis of Londonderry, is acknowledged as the promoter of the breed. His stock was used later in many breeding programs and is considered the foundation stock of many good-quality studs. Nowadays, the Shetland Pony Stud Book Society is the official registry for Shetlands in Great Britain. An International Shetland Pony Committee was formed in the 1990s with daughter organizations in many European countries. The American Shetland Pony Club is the official registry for Shetland Ponies in the United States. It was established in 1888 to keep records of pedigrees and care for the welfare of the breed. It supplies the breeders and owners of Shetland Ponies with educational materials and organizes shows and events both for entertainment and breed promotion.
